Painting Addie: A Pet Portrait for a 40th Anniversary

My parents' 40th anniversary was approaching, and my dad wanted a truly special and personal gift for my mom. The perfect idea? A hand-painted portrait of their beloved dog, Addie. Addie isn't just a pet; she's a constant companion, often seen with my mom on her trips to Starbucks. Capturing her sweet face on canvas felt like the perfect way to celebrate their life together.

The process of painting a pet portrait is a journey of layers, from the initial sketch to the final details that bring the character to life. I wanted to share the progress and the materials I used to create this special gift.

The Process

Step 1: The Initial Sketch The first step was to get the likeness just right. I started by lightly sketching Addie's face onto the canvas. A good drawing is the foundation of a good painting, so I took my time to ensure her features were in the correct proportions.

Step 2: The Background With the sketch complete, I began with the background. I chose a vibrant, deep blue to make Addie's light fur pop. I used a mix of Artist's Loft Academic Level 1 Acrylic Phthalo Blue and a bit of Titanium White to get the desired shade. Painting the background first helps to define the edges of the subject and creates a more cohesive look.

Step 3: Laying the Foundation for the Fur Next, I started blocking in the main colors of Addie's fur. I used a mix of Liquitex Basics Acrylics Raw Sienna and Artist's Loft Raw Umber, along with Titanium White, to create the foundational shades. I also painted in her dark eyes, which immediately gave the painting more life. You can see the initial patches of her brown and white fur beginning to take shape. I also added in the dark tones for her nose and a hint of pink for her collar using Liquitex Basics Acrylics Quinacridone Magenta and Artist’s Loft Academic Level 1 Acrylic Brilliant Red.

Step 4: Building the Face This is where the magic really starts to happen. I began building up the layers, adding more detail and depth to her fur and nose. I mixed Raw Sienna and Raw Umber with Titanium White for the lighter fur.

Step 5: Adding the Final Touches The last steps are all about refinement. I focused on adding the highlights and shadows that give the painting a three-dimensional quality. I used a very small brush to create the wispy individual hairs on her face, especially around her eyes and nose, using various mixes of Raw Sienna, Raw Umber, and Titanium White. I also defined the pink inside of her ears. The reflections in her eyes were the final, crucial detail, painted with tiny dots of Titanium White to give her a spark of life and personality.

The Final Product

The painting is a reflection of Addie's sweet and curious personality, and it was an honor to create such a meaningful gift. Watching my mom's face light up when she saw it was the best part of the whole process. It's more than just a painting; it's a piece of their story, a symbol of their life together, and a reminder of the love they share—not just for each other, but for their little Starbucks companion, Addie.
